Unlike NZ, Australia was too slow to shut things down, and that just made
things worse.

Didn’t Melbourne end up with the longest lockdown ever, anywhere?

I agree - China (in at least one province) had much longer lockdowns,
and Taiwan may also have been longer; there may also have been small
island states that effectively had lockdowns from a lack of travel
between them and the rest of the world.

Did one lockdown in the State of Victoria last longer than the longest
lock-down in New Zealand though?

Taiwan, South Korea and Japan were among the quickest to act. They may
have closed their borders as we did, but I don’t think they needed much in
the way of actual lockdowns.

South Korea even figured out how to hold a general election in the middle
of the pandemic; nobody was denied their right to vote.
