It didn't do the trees in the nearby forrest much good, but many
animals seemed to fare better. Some locals kept on living in
rural parts of the Chernobyl exclusion zone for decades, some
perhaps still today. Refugees from wars in eastern europe during
the 90s moved into some of the houses that had already been
evacuated, though I'm not sure how long they stayed there.

inconvenient truth to the attention of Aussie voters.
Somehow I don't think it's a strong argument in favor of nuclear
energy that nuclear contamination might not be so bad _after_ the
reactor has exploded. Power plants that don't explode tend to be
preferred either way.
